1st LEAP Inter-Collegiate Open House

The 1st LEAP Inter-collegiate open house for LP201 - Practicum for Innovative Engineering - was conducted successfully at IIT Madras Research Park, Chennai. 7 winning teams were selected to participate in this event from 3 colleges that underwent the LEAP LP201 Program from 2021 to 2022.

The Director of IIT Madras Prof. V. Kamakoti, the President of IIT Madras Research Park and IITM Incubation cell Prof. Ashok Jhunjhunwala, and the Former Director of IIT Madras, Prof. Bhaskar Ramamurthi were some of the distinguished academicians who visited the Open house. They interacted with the students on their projects and appreciated them, inspiring the students to do more.

The Open house also had visitors from industry - Entrepreneurs/Industry Personnel from IITM IC Incubated companies, RTBi Incubated companies, and companies located in the IIT Madras Research Park. Several faculty and students from various academic institues also made a visit. The event was enjoyable and exciting and highly motivational and inspiring for the young student community.

The Founder, LEAP Prof Timothy Gonsalves, emphasized a hands-on approach to learning and encouraged the Student Community to develop a Product Mindset right from the 1st year of their Engineering course. At the Open House, the students demonstrated how the LEAP program helps to apply theory to practice.

As part of the event, Chief Guest Prof V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras addressed the students, emphasizing the significance of practical learning and entrepreneurship. He highlighted the importance of hands-on learning and how engineering products can be taken to the market.

And Guest of Honour Ms. Damayanti Bhattacharya, CEO of Maker Bhavan Foundation spoke about innovation and emphasized the importance of a multi-disciplinary approach to real-world problem solving. She encouraged students to apply for the MBF's Viswakarma Award for Engineering Innovation.

At the conclusion of the Inter-collegiate open house, the judges announced the Winning project as "Robotic Arm" and the Runner-up as "Vehicle Headlight Brightness Adjustment". The Open house highlighted the creative thinking and passion of the teams. Student teams were mentored by faculty of their college who had been trained in the LEAP methodology by LEAP experts. They also attended sessions by IIT faculty and industry experts on product design and development.
